Trippie Redd at Irving Plaza
Trippie Redd is a name in the current rap landscape that is actively changing the sound and overall aesthetic of the genre, incorporating soft emo ballads paired with auto-tuned vocals on some tracks, while still using his raw technical rap skill on others. The Ohio native made a stop at Irving Plaza during his Life’s A Trip tour, but he was nowhere near alone and brought a lot of talent with him on tour. Trippie’s openers included Atlanta’s own Lil Duke and Lil Keed from the YSL camp, along with female rap up-and-comer Coi Leray.
Although Trippie himself was not in the best of health for this stop on the tour, his physical ailments didn’t affect the overall energy or quality of the performance. The “Topanga” rapper performed songs from his entire discography, singing some ballads from his debut album, “Life's A Trip”. He also took fans back to his early SoundCloud bangers with songs off his debut mixtape “A Love Letter To You”. Unfortunately, Trippie did have to take a brief intermission during his set because of an apparent case of the flu, but during the hiatus, Brooklyn rapper Casanova came out for a surprise performance. When Trippie did come back to the stage, he returned with the same level of energy and enthusiasm as always and the crowd loved it. Lil Keed’s set was also very noteworthy, performing “Red Hot” & “Balenciaga” with incredible enthusiasm.
Although Big 14 wasn’t at his peak physical performance, he still was able to put on a memorable, sold out experience for all in attendance. Trippie is always working on new music and hopefully with his next project and tour he makes another great stop in New York.
