Soundset Festival 2019

Soundset Festival 2019

In its twelfth year, Minneapolis’ Soundset Festival has become one of the most anticipated events of the summer that features an all-star lineup with some of the greatest acts in hip hop. This annual festival has become a staple to the Minnesota rap community being independently ran by Rhymesayers. What started off as a small local festival now has attendance of over thirty-thousand people. This year’s main headliners included the likes of Lil Wayne and SZA. Lil Uzi Vert was originally scheduled to perform at the festival, but in his typical and unpredictable nature, he suddenly cancelled his performance with no explanation as to why. This didn’t shock or even phase festival attendees as this is the second time Uzi has cancelled his performance at Soundset, however they were treated to a surprise Lil Nas X and DaBaby set to make up for the Philadelphia rapper’s absence. Other notable names on the bill featured the entire Beast Coast collective, which includes members Joey Badass, The Flatbush Zombies, The Underachievers, Nyck Caution & Kirk Knight. This was the first time the collective performed together since the release of their debut collaborative project “Escape From New York”, although you wouldn’t be able to tell due to their incredible on stage chemistry. The local artist Prof also had a standout performance because of its unconventional nature; the Minnesota native performed one of his songs on what appeared to be a giant pool float and another on a large yoga mat laid across the hands of fans in the crowd. Many Weezy fans in attendance spent the day wondering if his set would suffer the same fate as Lil Uzi’s due to Wayne’s history of cancelling Soundset performances, however they were pleasantly surprised when the Louisiana legend did come out on time for his set. Lil Wayne’s set included songs from his entire discography from Tha Carter 2 all the way through Tha Carter V, giving everyone in attendance a memorable performance. Although no festival is without its mishaps outside of their control, the team over at Soundset put on another unforgettable festival for everyone in attendance.
